Preschool Programs
Welcome to the Claremont Unified School District Child Development Preschool Program! It is our pleasure and privilege to share in the growth and development of your child and your family.
The preschools are located on the campuses of Sumner/Danbury and Mt. View Elementary. The preschool programs offer a morning class from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and an afternoon class from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
CUSD's State Preschool program is a school-readiness program that provides services to qualifying children who are three and four years of age. The Preschool Inclusion Program at Mt. View is a collaborative preschool program in which students with special needs attend school with their typically developing peers. The Preschool Inclusion Program is a combination of state preschool and parent fee-based options.
All classes are offered Monday-Friday and follow CUSD's school calendar which can be viewed online.

High Quality Programs
The CUSD Preschool Programs are licensed by the State of California, Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Child Care Division. As a licensed child care program, we are required to maintain mandated levels of health and safety requirements as set forth within the Title 22 Regulations for Child Care Centers. Our Preschool Programs have four and five star ratings from Quality Start Los Angeles (QSLA). Quality Start LA assesses Preschool Programs using the following elements that are known to contribute to high-quality early learning:

Program Philosophy
It is the belief of CUSD's Preschool Program's that the child’s day should reflect an interest in developing the whole child by:
- providing learning experiences within an environment that is stable, familiar and predictable, yet allows for individual flexibility
- supporting children towards their optimal level of development through active participation and exploration that values the child as a contributing member to his/her learning
- making connections with the family and community in support of the child
- having access to knowledgeable teaching staff who are in tune with the needs and abilities of each child and has extended understanding of child development
The approach to planning learning experiences for the preschool child is based on the belief that:
- Children learn best when taught in all areas of development
- Children learn best when the family and community work together to support the child and the program
- Children learn best when challenges are addressed early and resources are provided to assist the child in meeting their full potential
- Children learn best when provided with hands on experiences that are relevant to their daily lives
Preschool Goals and Objectives
The fundamental goal of CUSD's Preschool Programs is to ensure that all children in the program make progress in the areas of physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Children are provided with opportunities to interact with people and materials that will enhance their innate ability to explore the world around them, develop positive relationships with peers and expand their knowledge through active participation and play. Within CUSD’s Preschool programs, we pride ourselves on providing each child with an individualized plan for learning that recognizes their current level of development and supports them as they master new skills and abilities. Our classrooms provide children with a safe and nurturing space that welcomes children to take charge of their learning and be involved in the learning process.
The objective of the CUSD Preschool's is to ensure that all children achieve four broad desired results that have been defined as conditions of well-being for children:
- Children are personally and socially competent
- Children are effective learners
- Children show physical and motor competence
- Children are safe and healthy
To assist teaching staff in creating experiences that support these four (4) desired results, we utilize the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) to assess the development of each child. The assessment is also used to plan for, and conduct age and developmentally appropriate activities and learning experiences. A DRDP is completed on each child within the first sixty (60) days of enrollment and every six (6) months thereafter.
Registration
California State Preschool Programs are offered at Mountain View Elementary and Sumner/Danbury Elementary. State preschool programs are free. Eligibility for the program is determined by:
- Family is a current aid recipient;
- Family is income eligible;
- Family is homeless;
- Family has children who are recipients of child protective services, or are identified as at risk of being abused, neglected, or exploited.
The fee-based preschool program is located at Mountain View Elementary Inclusion preschool. Registration fee of $75 is non-refundable. Annual tuition is divided into 10 equal installments, September through June.
