Health Guidelines for Parents

  • Be alert to early signs of illness such as fever, persistent cough, decreased appetite, nausea, poor skin color, watering eyes, change in personality, loose stools, or nasal discharge not related to allergies.

  • Do not send a child to school that has been ill with a fever above 100 degrees.  The child must be fever free for 24 hours and not under the influence of medication (no fever and not taking any fever reducing medication ex.  Tylenol or Motrin).

  • When your child is seriously ill, consult your physician or clinic without delay. Early treatment may prevent a more serious illness.

  • When your child has a communicable or infectious disease, please notify the school office, nurse, or health assistant immediately so that appropriate measures can be taken to protect other children in the class.

Students should stay home from school if any of the following signs or symptoms are present:

  1. Fever over 101 degrees with symptoms of illness (ex. sore throat, rash, vomiting, diarrhea).  For students with a low grade temperature, please consider keeping them home if the temperature seems to be rising or if they do not feel well enough to participate in class.

  2. Diarrhea due to illness (2 or more loose stools or stool with mucus or more than a drop of blood).

  3. Vomiting due to illness.

  4. Severely ill appearance (illness with lethargy, irritability, behavior changes, persistent crying, difficulty breathing, or a quickly spreading rash). Please seek medical attention.

  5. Coughing excessively or difficulty breathing without relief from medication.

  6. Severe asthma symptoms that are not relieved with medication.

  7. An unidentified or potentially contagious rash (ex. chicken pox, scarlet fever, staph infection). Please consult with a physician before returning to school.

  8. Skin sores with weeping fluid that cannot be covered with a waterproof dressing.

  9. Severe toothache with unrelieved pain.  Please contact a dentist for urgent treatment.

  10. Possible fracture or significant untreated injury.  Please consult with a physician.

  11. Live head lice.  Please treat before returning to school.

  12. The student’s illness results in a need for care that is greater than staff members can provide without compromising the health and safety of other children.

  13. The student is feeling too ill to participate in school activities

*Exceptions can be made at the discretion of a Credentialed School Nurse*

These are general guidelines for common health issues in school-age children.  This does not constitute a comprehensive list of all health conditions for which children may need to stay home from school.

Student Emergency Cards

It is very important that your child’s emergency information is kept updated in the school office.  Please notify the office of any change in contact names or phone numbers.
